Primera Luna: The classic Via Ferrata in Gran Canaria

Primera Luna, the classic Via Ferrata of Gran Canaria

You can’t miss one of our best activities in the mountains. Enjoy one of the most spectacular landscapes our island has to offer with the utmost safety! The Ferrata is located in the Barranco del Berriel, a typical ravine in the south of Gran Canaria. Its canyon-like structure and the Tabaibal-Cardonal-dominated vegetation make this place a spectacular destination that you can enjoy from the heights of this Via Ferrata. We reach the Ferrata after a pleasant walk along a gravel path that runs through the bottom of the ravine.

Via Ferrata Gran Canaria The Via begins with a gentle slope on the wall; there are some vertical sections, but they are very easy and pleasant traverses between caves until we reach the exit path, which allows us to leave if we are with uncertain beginners. If you don’t feel sufficiently experienced to tackle this Via, it’s better to consult Aventura en Canarias, the guides for Active Tourism in Gran Canaria.

In general, we can say that the Via is very well protected in terms of safety, and regarding the level, we can add that although the beginning is very easy and has many steps and rungs, these start to be less frequent further up, and there are some steps with a small degree of difficulty. This has nothing to do with the distant neighbor Extraplomis in terms of difficulty, but there are some passages similar to those of its close neighbor Primera Luna. There are many original and interesting things, but we let the pictures tell the rest.

More about Barranco El Berriel

The Barranco del Berriel is one of the many ravines that lead from the Macizo de Amurga to the coast of the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. It is wonderful to visit, as it forms and creates angles of great beauty.

A Story to Tell

We did it! Recently, I ventured onto my first Via Ferrata, and I couldn’t have chosen a better place than the impressive Barranco del Berriel in the south of Gran Canaria. This experience was a real challenge but also an unforgettable adventure. The Route: The Via Ferrata in Barranco del Berriel is known for its variety of sections and the incredible panoramic view of the ravine. The route has a moderate level of difficulty, ideal for those who, like me, are taking their first steps in this exciting sport. The ascent is technical, but with a little physical preparation, it is completely feasible. What I Experienced: From the first moment, adrenaline overwhelmed me. At first, the feeling of hanging at height is somewhat overwhelming, but as you progress and focus on each step, the excitement takes over. The views from the wall are breathtaking, with the sea in the background and the ravine stretching beneath your feet. Pablo M. Climbing on a Via Ferrata
